Orthodontic appliances are necessary when braces alone are not adequate to fully correct your orthodontic problem. Modern orthodontic treatment involves the use of both fixed and removable appliances. At Redbank Dental we work with you to develop a treatment plan that ensures ease of wear and use, solid aesthetic design, and great end results.

We know that you want a beautiful smile you are proud to show off, and an orthodontic appliance can help you get there. We carefully assess you and create an appliance that will fit comfortably in your mouth and provide the kind of alignment you need for the perfect smile.

Whether you need a fixed orthodontic appliance or a removable appliance (also known as a ‘plate’), we are here to provide you with top quality and caring dental treatments.

Types of Orthodontic Appliances Brisbane

What type of orthodontic appliance you need to get will depend on the type of alignment you need. Sometimes called ‘retainers’, your orthodontic appliance is there to either perform a minor adjustment or to keep your teeth in position after braces treatment

Fixed Appliances

Also known as braces, fixed appliances form a major part of the orthodontic treatments. We plan out your treatment and work with you to ensure your fixed appliance doesn’t interrupt your daily life. Your comfort and mouth movement is a priority, and we create a fixed appliance that will fit in with your teeth seamlessly.

We take your entire face into consideration and plan your treatment accordingly. We can help fix your jaw bite while correcting any teeth alignment issues in the long term.

Some fixed appliances are active devices, which means they provide force to the teeth. Other fixed appliances are passive devices which means that while they are fixed in the mouth, they do not provide force to the teeth.

Removable Appliances

Removable appliances play only a supporting role in comprehensive treatment but are important in the orthodontic treatment of children.

Removable appliances are appliances which can be easily removed and reinserted into mouth. They consist of wires and screws held together by a plastic base and are often used to hold teeth in their final position once braces treatment has been completed.

When would orthodontic retainer be used?

When a small amount of orthodontic correction is required.

After tooth movement using braces is complete, a retainer must be worn to hold the teeth and jaws in their new and proper position.

The retainer must be worn for approximately one year to help prevent the teeth or jaws from falling back to its original or starting position.

How Long Does It Take to Get Used to My Retainer?

Your retainer is going to look and feel new and foreign in your mouth. You may have to adjust your speech a little – but this will only last a few days until you are used to the feeling. Make sure you are talking, singing and smiling as much as possible to wear in the retainer and to get your mouth adjusted.

How Do I Clean and Care for My Retainer?

As long as you take good care of your retainer, it should last a long time. Here are some tips on caring for your dental appliance.

  • Make sure you don’t put your retainer into anything except the right container for your retainer
  • Don’t wrap your retainer up in tissues because you might accidentally throw it out
  • Brush your retainer with a toothbrush and toothpaste when you are brushing your teeth. You can also soak your retainer for around fifteen minutes in a small amount of diluted white vinegar to clean it
  • Avoid anything hard or sticky to eat as it can damage your retainer
