Crowns, Bridges and Veneers

Crowns, Bridges and Veneers… All yours at Redbank Dental who use the premium laboratories and ceramic technicians available to provide the best results.

Teeth can deteriorate and weaken for numerous reasons including trauma, decay, or you feel your teeth are too discoloured. In these cases, a crown, bridge and/or veneer can be one of the best long term solutions by delivering strength and aesthetic appeal.

Damaged, broken down or cracked tooth? A dental CROWN can restore it for you!

Your dentist has recommended a crown for your tooth, but just what is a dental crown?

There are many reasons why your dentist may have recommended a crown. For example a dental crown is the ideal restoration for damaged, cracked, badly decayed or root treated teeth. If your tooth has a very large existing filling, your dentist may recommend a crown as there is minimal tooth structure remaining – i.e. the tooth may be very weak and likely to break at some point, possibly rendering it unsalvageable. Crowns are also placed over dental implants to restore function.

Dental crowns completely cover or ‘cap’ your tooth to restore its shape and function, improve appearance, and give strength.

How are crowns made?

Crowns are considered “major dental”, your dentist will ensure you have an extended appointment booked in to allow plenty of time to prepare the tooth, take detailed impressions and make you a temporary crown.
The impression is then sent to a Dental Laboratory who will construct your custom made crown. Approximately 2 weeks after your crown preparation appointment you will need to return for a shorter appointment to have the temporary crown removed and have your permanent crown bonded or cemented in place.

What are crowns made of?

There are several different materials crowns can be made of, your dentist will discuss these options with you and recommend which material would be best for your individual case – the difference in cost is minimal; so although we will discuss this with you, it is unlikely to be a deciding factor in choosing which material to use for your crown.
The materials used to construct crowns are:

  1. Porcelain “all-ceramic”
  2. Porcelain fused to metal
  3. Gold

How long do crowns last?

Just as with your natural teeth, the durability of crowns depends on how well you look after them. So long as you implement good oral hygiene and return for regular preventative dental check-up and clean appointments, your crown should last for many years to come. Whilst crowns can last a lifetime, it is important to recognise that nothing lasts forever, with this in mind we generally say you can expect around 10 years out of a crown provided you look after it.

Bridges

Veneers Redbank DentalBridges are commonly used to replace one or more missing teeth. In order to have a bridge you need at least one tooth or implant crowned to serve as an anchor, usually however you have two – one tooth or implant either side of the ‘space/gap’ and then another crown suspended between them – just like a bridge over a river!

Bridges are usually made of Porcelain fused to metal (strong metal base with tooth coloured porcelain covering it), however all ceramic or all gold bridges can also be made. Your dentist will discuss the best option for your individual case.

Bridges are considered “major dental” and your dentist will ensure you have an appropriate length of time booked in; this will allow time to prepare the tooth/teeth, take detailed impressions and make a temporary bridge. The impression will be sent to a dental laboratory where your custom made bridge will be constructed. Approximately two weeks after your initial preparation appointment, you will need to return for a shorter appointment to have your permanent bridge fitted.

Bridges can last a lifetime, however, as with everything in dental they can also fail. Just as with your natural teeth, the durability of bridges depends on how well you look after them, so long as you implement good oral hygiene and return for regular dental check-ups and cleans, your bridge should last for many years to come.

Veneers

Veneers are tooth coloured facings with natural textures designed to cover the front surface of teeth, hiding any flaws and improving the appearance of your teeth. Dental veneers, sometimes called porcelain veneers, are custom made to your teeth and act as shells for the natural tooth. The shells are bound to the front of the teeth to alter the aesthetics of your teeth, including: colour, shape, size and length.
